Workshop disabled divers

Oceans 5 dive resort is offering workshops for divemaster trainees, divemasters and instructors how to handle disabled divers on land and in the water.

The workshop takes 2 days the participants learn how to handle with blind divers and paraplegic and quadriplegic customers.

In the water they played the role of blind divers and took it in turns to be the guide, having to think in a way that opened up their minds to new techniques such as speaking clearly to customers so they can understand what is happening without sight and tactile teaching. The participants learn to feel how it is to dive without any sight.

Next came scuba diving with paraplegic and quadriplegic customers in terms of equipment configuration, donning of wetsuits, lifting techniques, signs and so on. They learned many new techniques and realized that it is mainly peoples mindsets that limit the possibilities. Specially the bouyancy is an important topic during this part of the workshop. The bouyancy of a paraplegic customer is totally different.

The workshop opends a lot of divers their eyes. They learn to step out the box, and learn to become more flexible.

Clean up dive at Gili Air, Gili Islands great success

Oceans 5 dive resort organised another clean up dive in the harbor of Gili Air, Gili Islands.

12 persons joined the clean up dive. The location was in the front of Oceans 5 dive resort. This is the spot where the fastboats arrive and leave. The tourists that take the fast boats to Bali leave a lot of garbage behind them and a lot of it comes in the water and sinks to the bottom.

After one hour of diving the result was 11 bags full of plastic, plastic bottles, can etc. The area needs more clean up. Hopefully we see you all next time.

Seahorses in the harbor of Gili Air, Gili Islands, Lombok

The harbor of Gili Air is a really exciting dive spot. It one of the best muck diving spots around the Gili Islands. One of the main attractions are the 4 different kind of seahorses. You will find them straight in the front of Oceans 5 dive resort.

Seahorses are truly unique, and not just because of their unusual equine shape. Unlike most other fish, they are monogamous and mate for life. Rarer still, they are among the only animal species on Earth in which the male bears the unborn young.

Found in shallow tropical and temperate waters throughout the world, these upright-swimming relatives of the pipefish can range in size from 0.6 inches (1.5 centimeters) to 14 inches (35 centimeters) long.

Male seahorses are equipped with a brood pouch on their ventral, or front-facing, side. When mating, the female deposits her eggs into his pouch, and the male fertilizes them internally. He carries the eggs in his pouch until they hatch, then releases fully formed, miniature seahorses into the water.

Because of their body shape, seahorses are rather inept swimmers and can easily die of exhaustion when caught in storm-roiled seas. They propel themselves by using a small fin on their back that flutters up to 35 times per second. Even smaller pectoral fins located near the back of the head are used for steering.

They anchor themselves with their prehensile tails to sea grasses and corals, using their elongated snouts to suck in plankton and small crustaceans that drift by. Voracious eaters, they graze continually and can consume 3,000 or more brine shrimp per day.

Population data for most of the world’s 35 seahorse species is sparse. However, worldwide coastal habitat depletion, pollution, and rampant harvesting, mainly for use in Asian traditional medicine, have made several species vulnerable to extinction.

Flounders around the Gili Islands, Lombok

Sometimes if Oceans 5 is diving around the dive site Hans Reef, North of Gili Air, Lombok, the divers come back on the boat and the have seen someting moving in the sand but they dont know what they have seen. Most likely they have seen a Flounder. Flounders are hard to see and specially when you dont expected them, or you dont have a lot of experience.

The flounder is a species of flatfish that is found in the coastal waters of the northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Flounder are found hiding on the ocean floor at depths from shallow coral reefs to the deepest trench on Earth.

There are five different species of flounder found in the oceans, and only one of these flounder species (the Japanese flounder) is found in the Northern Pacific Ocean. The summer flounder, the winter flounder and the southern flounder are all found in the western Atlantic Ocean, while the European flounder is found in the colder waters around Northern Europe.

All five flounder species are very similar in appearance but can vary quite dramatically in size. Flounder can vary from 5 to 25 inches in size depending on the species, but all flounder species have a rounded, flattened body shape with a medium-sized flat tail fin.

The colours and markings of the flounder are dependant on the flounder species, although all five flounder species have adapted to life in the sand on the sea floor and they are often coloured to be camouflaged into their silty surroundings.

Flounder are carnivorous and highly predatory animals. The flounder hides on the sand on the sea floor waiting for potential prey, which the flounder ambushes once it has been spotted. Flounder prey on a variety of bottom-dwelling marine species including small fish, shrimp and crabs.

Due to the secretive nature and good camouflage of the flounder, it rarely spotted by predators. Large fish, sharks, eels, humans, and marine mammals all prey on the flounder when it can be spotted.

Rather than laying her eggs onto an inanimate object or the leaf of a plant, female flounders release them into the water at the time time as the male flounders release their sperm (this form of fertilisation is known as spawning). Once the eggs have been fertilised, the flounder fry begin emerging from them in just a couple of weeks.

Emergency First Response Course with Oceans 5 staff

Emergency First Response (EFR) is the fastest-growing international CPR, Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid training organization. Dedicated to training the lay rescuer, EFR courses encompasses adult, child and infant CPR skills, provides AED and First Aid training, and feature an outstanding First Aid at Work component. The company’s award-winning programs and state-of-the-art training materials make it a favorite among divers, paddlers, climbers, adventurers and outdoors enthusiasts around the world.

Many participants take the Emergency First Response courses to meet program prerequisites, such as Padi Resue Course, or as preparation for becoming a group leader. However, most have also found the EFR program to be important in every day life. They have taken a significant step in emergency preparedness, and feel confident that they can provide care should an emergency situation arise.

Oceans 5 dive resort trains his staff to become an Emergency First Resonder. The last few days EFR Instructor Jmal and Sander are teaching 2 staff members. Its important that the staff can help people in an emergency not only in the water but also on land. For our locals it is also a great tool what to do if something happends in the local village.

If you are planning on becoming a PADI Instructor or PADI IDC Staff Instructor, you are also required to be an EFR Instructor. If you became a PADI Instructor before the pre-requisite was introduced or need to renew your certification, you probably already know that it is of great value to be an EFR Instructor. It will make you more employable and more able to teach Rescue and DM courses. Many dive instructors (including ourselves) have found it the “foot in the door” they needed in order to get a competitive PADI Dive Instructor job.

Oceans 5 dive resort offers regularly scheduled EFR Instructor courses as part of their PADI IDCs and can also offer them on request, one-on-one. Even if you are not doing your PADI IDC with them, why not think about doing this with them in advance to remove some of the stress and workload during the IDC?

Anyone can become EFR certified or an EFR Instructor, it is not even required to be a diver. These courses teach first aid and CPR skills that are valuable for everyone on the planet. As well as an adult First Aid and CPR Instructor you will become a Care for Children Instructor and will be able to teach infant and child CPR techniques.
