Interaction between the shrimp and the Goby

The blind shrimp and the goby

Gobies belong to one of the most speciose fish families consisting of around 2000 members.

Most of the gobies are rather small and have very little direct defence against predators. Thus, most gobies in reef areas live in close association with animals such as wire corals, branching corals and sea pens that the gobies can hide in, around or between.

However, that leaves major and rather productive parts of the reef area such as sand or rubble patches or silty slopes uninhabitable for gobies, as there is no way for the small fish, with the defensive skills of an overboiled macaroni to evade predators  in such areas. But, as it so clearly is stated in the classic movie “Jurassic park”, nature finds its way!

Some gobies have in an amazing evolutionary process acquired the help of a group of shrimps in order to create shelter in the barren open areas. The shrimps belong to the pistol shrimps of the genus Alpheus, shrimps that often dig burrows.

Some species of these shrimp have far from 20/20 eyesight, which obviously is a problem being diurnal and living in open areas abounding with predators. The gobies, in contrast, have excellent vision, and, furthermore, have their pelvic fins extended as a pedestal. In the relationship between the shrimp and the goby, the Alpheus shrimp digs a burrow, which is used as shelter by both the shrimp and the goby. In turn, the goby spends its day outside the opening of the tunnel, resting on its extended pelvis fins, and keeping carefully watch over the immediate area, alerting the shrimp when danger comes to close, resulting in the shrimps retreat into the burrow.

The goby-shrimp relationship is an example of what is called an obligate mutualism. These gobies are never found without their shrimp partners, and, conversely, the partner shrimp are never found without their goby partners.

As far as I know, coral reef areas and their immediate surroundings offer by far the most examples of such interspecies symbiotic relationships essential for both species survival. The real cool thing about the shrimp-goby symbiosis is that the shrimp and the goby go one step further in their coevolution than most other species pairs.

The goby is capable of communicating levels of danger to the shrimp. Thus, the shrimp sometimes respond to signals from the goby by working closer to the burrow opening, sometimes by working in the actual burrow opening, and sometimes by totally retreating into the burrow itself. This quite detailed interspecific communication is very rare in nature, at least when invertebrates such as shrimp are parts of the interaction.

The actual method of the communication between the pair is performed by contact of one of the very long antennas of the shrimp to the posterior dorsal fin of the goby. When the shrimp wants to get out of the burrow the shrimp first extends one of the antennae out of the opening, contacting the fin of the goby. If the coast is clear, the goby wiggles its fin in a certain way, telling the shrimp that it can come out. As long as the shrimp is outside the burrow, its antenna will be touching the gobies fin. The goby communicates danger levels corresponding to the proximity of a predator to the shrimp by using different “wiggle” patterns of the fin, differing in frequency and intensity.

How about nighttime, then? During the dark hours, he goby cannot see much. The burrow then turns into more of a trap than a refuge, as many of the small eels hunting on the sand can also penetrate the burrow, thus capturing both the goby and the shrimp. Luckily the shrimp and the goby have a solution for that. Outside the burrow entry there are always small pebbles scattered. When dusk falls, after the goby has retreated down into the burrow, the shrimp uses these pebbles to close the burrow, Thus, with the burrow entry securely closed, the couple can spend the rest of the night in safety.

Yesterday we saw during a divemaster trainee workshop 2 times a wonderpus totally free. But if you like seahorses, pipefish, gurnets, all kind of lionfish, some nudis or flatworms, the Oceans 5 house reef is a great one to dive.

Oceans 5 like to thank Peter and Daniel who organised all the clean up during high season. But we dont want to forget all the people who joined and helped us to get a better and cleaner reef! Thank You!!!!

Padi Instructor Development Course (IDC) has started at Oceans 5 dive resort!

Oceans 5′s Padi instructor development course has started. Oceans 5 dive resort welcomes Paden, Cindy, Max, Matt, Lara, Marius, Signe and Agnes.

The course director of the IDC will be Padi Platinum course director Camille Lemmens. The instructor course will take 10 days. There are possibilities to do some specialty instructor training.

This time the Padi instructor exame will be on Gili Air, the 28th till the 30st of August.

For all the candidates: HAVE FUN!!!!

Turtle release Gili Air the 20th of July

The Gili Islands are famous for their turtles. All around the 3 little islands on the north side of lombok you will find them. It doesnt matter if you snorkel or dive the turtles are always around.

The most common turtles around the Gili Islands are the Hawksbill and Green Turtle , but there are also Olive Ridleys.

Oceans 5 dive resort is taking care of 50 little Hawksbill turtles and 1 big Olive Ridley turtle. Twice a day they are getting food and new seawater. The little ones are growing fast and the big one is still recovering of an injury.

But yesterday Oceans 5 dive resort released a few turtles. they were released close to the oceans, and a few minutes later they found the water.

Hopefully we see them later during some dives… Happy travels little ones….

Busy times, high season is starting

The last few days the amount of people arriving on Gili Air is increasing. We see them every day arriving in front of Oceans 5 dive resort with the fast boats from Bali.

Not all of the people who are visiting Gili Air are diving but a lot of them do. Diving, and snorkeling are the main attractions of the island. It is beautiful world under the water and you can find it all around the Gili Islands.

For people who never dived before, there are pools to try scuba diving, like the Oceans 5 pool. A 25 meter pool specially made for scuba diving. It is a perfect place to start your first dive experiences.

Yesterday Oceans 5 dive resort had 21 students in the pool. If you look at the picture you will see there is space for everyone, and that the instructor are teaching only small groups, max 4 persons.

Turtle release and beach/reef clean up at Oceans 5 dive resort

Oceans 5 dive resort is taking care of their environment. They do with with their weekly beach and reef clean up in the harbor of Gili Air, Gili Islands. But also Oceans 5 has a turtle conservation programme.

Yesterday Oceans 5 did a clean up in the harbor of Gili Air with 6 people. They found a lot of rubbish, in total 6 bags. Plastic bottles, cans, chips bags, wood, stone, glass, etc are the main part of the collected rubbish.

A few hour later Oceans 5 released 25 turtles. They have been for 3 months at Oceans 5 dive resort and they are now big enough to experience the real world. In the beginning they didnt know where to go, but all found their way to the water and dived into it. After a few goodbyes all turtles decided to swimm yo the deep part. Hopefully we see them one day….

Workshop disabled divers

Oceans 5 dive resort is offering workshops for divemaster trainees, divemasters and instructors how to handle disabled divers on land and in the water.

The workshop takes 2 days the participants learn how to handle with blind divers and paraplegic and quadriplegic customers.

In the water they played the role of blind divers and took it in turns to be the guide, having to think in a way that opened up their minds to new techniques such as speaking clearly to customers so they can understand what is happening without sight and tactile teaching. The participants learn to feel how it is to dive without any sight.

Next came scuba diving with paraplegic and quadriplegic customers in terms of equipment configuration, donning of wetsuits, lifting techniques, signs and so on. They learned many new techniques and realized that it is mainly peoples mindsets that limit the possibilities. Specially the bouyancy is an important topic during this part of the workshop. The bouyancy of a paraplegic customer is totally different.

The workshop opends a lot of divers their eyes. They learn to step out the box, and learn to become more flexible.

Oceans 5 won their second match during the Gili Air fusball championship

After a night of the final of the champion league, Oceans 5 team has to play their second match. This time it was Alibaba.

Alibaba lost their first game and for them it was the only game that they needed to win to go to the next round. Oceans 5 was warned, but didnt started well. Alibaba started strong, they overwelmed Oceans 5 with brave, attacking fusball. In a few minutes the result of their strategy was there, Alibaba was with 2 goals in the lead.

Oceans was was struggling, didnt find the pace and never took control over the game in the first half. It didnt look good for them, a dissaster was above there heads. But how bad everything went in the first half how good it sta the second half.

After Oceans 5 made their first goal of the game, they start working for eachother. There was suddenly a team, and not 5 individual fusball players. Oceans 5 scored the second goal and the the game was going on for a 2-2 end score. But in extra time Oceans 5 was the lucky one. Jmal made the 3 goal, and the end result was 3-2 for Oceans 5.
