One particularly interesting development is that Gili Air has apparently become an international training center for future MotoGP champions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parents can simply rent an electric scooter, put their child on it and release their future Valentino Rossi onto the roads of Gili Air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Helmet?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Optional, apparently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Driving experience?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why ruin the excitement?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Knowledge of Indonesian traffic rules?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Details, details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Understanding which side of the road Indonesia drives on?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Something you can discover during the journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The roads of Gili Air have therefore become an excellent slalom course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Walking tourists are the poles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bicycles are moving obstacles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cats add an advanced difficulty level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cidomos are the boss level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And crossroads are apparently designed specifically to test acceleration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The objective seems simple: reach the intersection as quickly as possible and hope everybody else has better brakes than you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Alberto Tomba Would Be Proud<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
For younger readers who may not remember him, Alberto Tomba was a legendary Italian alpine skier famous for attacking slalom courses at incredible speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Gili Air, we now have our own tropical version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead of skis, we use electric scooters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead of snow poles, we use pedestrians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tourist with suitcase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Local carrying groceries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interesting thing is that many visitors would never allow their children to behave like this at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In many countries, there are clear restrictions concerning the age at which children can operate powered vehicles on public roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Parents wouldn’t normally say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Darling, you’re six now. Take this motorized vehicle and go practice between pedestrians.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But apparently the moment some people step off the boat onto Gili Air, normal logic goes on holiday too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The island becomes a theme park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No cars means no rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No police on every corner means no danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Holiday means everything is allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Except physics unfortunately doesn’t take holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe a Driving Lesson First?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps before renting out an electric bike, we could introduce a revolutionary new concept:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Knowing how to ride one.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nI know. Very controversial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lesson one:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How do you start an electric bike without accidentally launching yourself into a restaurant?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lesson two:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Which side of the road do we drive on in Indonesia?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lesson three:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What happens at a crossroads?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hint: the correct answer is not “accelerate.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lesson four:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pedestrians are human beings, not slalom poles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lesson five:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When you see a child, dog, cat, bicycle or cidomo in front of you, slowing down is an available option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lesson six:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Your holiday insurance does not magically turn you into Valentino Rossi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps after completing these six highly complicated lessons, tourists could receive the prestigious:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gili Air Electric Scooter Driving Licence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
A beautiful laminated card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Valid for seven days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With a photograph, signature and perhaps a little golden coconut for people who successfully understand that Indonesia drives on the left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fail the test?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Congratulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You have won a bicycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But Do We Actually Need 1,000 Electric Bikes?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
This is the more serious question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gili Air is tiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can walk from the south of the island to the north in roughly 30 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Walking around the whole island takes approximately 90 minutes, depending on how often you stop for coffee, food, turtles, sunsets or conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That was part of the charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You arrived on an island where life moved differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You walked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You cycled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You slowed down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You didn’t need an engine for a seven-minute journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of course, there are reasonable exceptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Businesses need transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Older people may need assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People with disabilities should absolutely have access to suitable mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are also legitimate practical situations where electric transportation makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But that doesn’t automatically mean everybody arriving at the harbor needs an electric scooter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At what point do we ask ourselves what kind of island we actually want?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because if every visitor needs motorized transportation to travel 500 meters, perhaps the problem isn’t Gili Air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Paradise With a Charging Cable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Gili Air used to sell a very simple image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A tropical island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Coconut trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
White beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No motorbikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Walk barefoot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ride a bicycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Slow down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now perhaps our tourism marketing needs updating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Visit beautiful Gili Air!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nEnjoy our beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dive with turtles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Watch the sunset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And experience the thrilling sensation of having a twelve-year-old pass you at maximum speed while you peacefully walk back to your hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For an additional authentic experience, try crossing an intersection at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No reservation required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We Are Waiting for the Accident<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
And this is where the joke stops being quite so funny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the number of electric bikes increases dramatically while riders include inexperienced adults and very young children, the risk inevitably increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eventually, somebody is going to get seriously hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe it will be a rider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe a pedestrian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe somebody stepping out of a restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe a collision with a bicycle or cidomo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And after that happens, everyone will suddenly become extremely interested in regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There will be meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There will be discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People will ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“How could this happen?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We need to do something!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We need rules!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But we don’t actually have to wait for a serious accident before discussing the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We can see it developing in front of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So What Is the Solution?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
There are several possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We could establish clear rules about who may rent and operate electric bikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We could introduce a minimum age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We could require rental companies to provide a basic safety briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We could establish speed limits in busy areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We could clearly explain Indonesian road rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We could restrict electric vehicles in certain pedestrian-heavy areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We could create a simple Gili Air riding certificate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or we could take the strongest approach and stop renting electric bikes to tourists altogether, while maintaining sensible exemptions for residents, businesses, older people and people with disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe that sounds extreme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But is it really?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the reasons people came to Gili Air in the first place was precisely because it was different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No motorbikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No rushing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An island where you could walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps progress doesn’t always mean adding more engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes progress means protecting what made a place special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Welcome to Gili Air \u2014 Please Slow Down<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Nobody is suggesting that electric mobility itself is evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Electric bikes can be extremely useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The question is whether a tiny island needs more than a thousand of them and whether everybody\u2014including young children and people who have apparently never ridden one before\u2014should be allowed to use the public roads without basic instruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gili Air doesn’t need another thousand Valentino Rossis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It doesn’t need a MotoGP circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It doesn’t need pedestrians practicing emergency evasive maneuvers every time they walk to dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It needs some common sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So perhaps next time you arrive on Gili Air, try something truly adventurous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With your legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It’s an ancient transportation system that requires no battery, no charging station and remarkably little driving experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You might even notice the coconut trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You might say hello to somebody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You might discover a small restaurant you would otherwise have passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You might remember why you came to a tiny tropical island in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And don’t worry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Valentino Rossi already retired from MotoGP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
