But if pollution continues,\n      anchors keep damaging coral and coastal development keeps\n      increasing pressure on the sea, restoration alone cannot\n      deliver lasting protection.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      <strong>\n        Our starting point is simple: understand the causes,\n        reduce the damage and give recovery a better chance.\n      <\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n  <\/section>\n\n  <section class=\"o5-box\">\n    <h2>Our approach: prevention alongside restoration<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n      Reef restoration is easy to see. A coral nursery or an\n      underwater structure gives visitors something tangible to\n      photograph and support. Wastewater treatment, responsible\n      planning and compliance with environmental rules are less\n      visible, but they can be just as important.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      At Oceans 5, we want these less visible issues to be central\n      to the conservation conversation around Gili Air, Gili Meno\n      and Gili Trawangan.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      This is our position, rather than a claim that every other\n      organization works differently. Conservation groups,\n      researchers, residents and businesses can contribute in\n      different ways. We believe restoration has its strongest\n      future when prevention is part of the same plan.\n    <\/p>\n  <\/section>\n\n  <section class=\"o5-box\">\n    <h2>Healthy reefs depend on healthy islands<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n      A reef is connected to what happens on the land beside it.\n      Water use, drainage, construction, waste disposal and boat\n      operations can all influence the surrounding marine\n      environment.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      For the Gili Islands, these connections raise practical\n      questions. Can infrastructure cope with additional\n      development? Is wastewater properly treated? Are coastal\n      habitats protected? Are boats using suitable moorings?\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      <strong>\n        These are pressures to investigate and manage.\n        Establishing what caused damage at a particular reef\n        requires local evidence.\n      <\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n  <\/section>\n\n  <div class=\"o5-grid\">\n\n    <section class=\"o5-box\">\n      <h3>1. Development and wastewater<\/h3>\n\n      <p>\n        More rooms, restaurants and visitors generally mean more\n        wastewater. If treatment capacity does not grow with\n        demand, the risk of pollution increases.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <p>\n        Untreated or poorly treated wastewater can introduce\n        excess nutrients and pathogens into coastal waters.\n        Nutrient enrichment can encourage excessive algae growth,\n        while the breakdown of organic matter can consume oxygen.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <p>\n        <strong>Our priority:<\/strong>\n        ask how wastewater will be collected, treated and\n        monitored before adding further pressure.\n      <\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n    <section class=\"o5-box\">\n      <h3>2. Building and marine protection rules<\/h3>\n\n      <p>\n        Responsible development includes checking applicable\n        land-use, building, environmental and marine\n        protected-area requirements before work begins.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <p>\n        Conservation must include questions about whether\n        development respects those requirements. Suspected\n        breaches should be documented and referred to the\n        responsible authorities; individual cases need\n        verified records.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <p>\n        <strong>Our priority:<\/strong>\n        make compliance part of the conservation discussion.\n      <\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n    <section class=\"o5-box\">\n      <h3>3. Anchors and boat activity<\/h3>\n\n      <p>\n        An anchor dropped onto living coral can break the habitat\n        that divers and restoration teams are trying to protect.\n        More boat activity can increase the risk where anchoring\n        and mooring arrangements are inadequate.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <p>\n        Suitable moorings, maintenance, clear operating practices\n        and effective oversight belong in a reef protection plan.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <p>\n        <strong>Our priority:<\/strong>\n        prevent repeated physical damage while supporting\n        reef recovery.\n      <\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n    <section class=\"o5-box\">\n      <h3>4. Beaches, construction and turtles<\/h3>\n\n      <p>\n        Beaches are wildlife habitat as well as places for\n        tourism. Coastal construction and shoreline hardening\n        can reduce or obstruct suitable turtle nesting space.\n        Artificial lighting can also disturb nesting turtles\n        and disorient hatchlings.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <p>\n        Erosion needs careful assessment. Waves, storms, sediment\n        supply and coastal structures can all influence shoreline\n        change; a single photograph cannot establish the cause.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <p>\n        <strong>Our priority:<\/strong>\n        protect beach habitat and assess coastal changes before\n        choosing an intervention.\n      <\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n  <\/div>\n\n  <section class=\"o5-box\">\n    <h2>A quick clarification about water chemistry<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n      It would be misleading to say that more wastewater\n      automatically means a higher pH. Pollution can affect water\n      chemistry in different ways, depending on local conditions.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      Useful monitoring should consider nutrients, dissolved\n      oxygen, microbial contamination, temperature and pH\n      together. Ocean acidification is a separate, connected\n      pressure: seawater absorbs carbon dioxide, which lowers pH.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      <strong>\n        We need measurements to understand what is happening\n        around a particular reef.\n      <\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n  <\/section>\n\n  <section class=\"o5-box\">\n    <h2>Where coral restoration fits<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n      We support the principle of helping damaged ecosystems\n      recover. Carefully planned coral restoration and\n      appropriately designed artificial reefs can contribute\n      to that work.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      However, adding a structure is not automatically the same\n      as rebuilding a functioning reef. Projects need clear\n      objectives, suitable locations, appropriate approvals,\n      ecological expertise and long-term monitoring.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      Restoration can take place while threats are being reduced.\n      The important point is that it should not become a substitute\n      for addressing continuing damage.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      Climate change and marine heatwaves also threaten reefs.\n      Better local management cannot remove those global\n      pressures, but it remains an essential part of protecting\n      the marine environment.\n    <\/p>\n  <\/section>\n\n  <section class=\"o5-box o5-highlight\">\n    <h2>\n      Repair matters. Preventing repeated damage matters too.\n    <\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n      If the same pressures continue, restoration risks becoming\n      a cycle of repairing damage that could have been prevented.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      <strong>\n        We want conservation success to include cleaner water,\n        better coastal decisions, protected habitat and less\n        physical damage\u2014not only the number of corals planted.\n      <\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n  <\/section>\n\n  <section class=\"o5-box\">\n    <h2>What this means at Oceans 5<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n      Our conservation approach connects everyday diving practices\n      with education, community participation and attention to\n      the wider island environment.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <ul>\n      <li>\n        <strong>Reduce damage during dives:<\/strong>\n        promote good buoyancy, no touching and respect for\n        marine life.\n      <\/li>\n\n      <li>\n        <strong>Support practical action:<\/strong>\n        involve staff, visitors and residents in beach clean-ups\n        and environmental learning.\n      <\/li>\n\n      <li>\n        <strong>Encourage research:<\/strong>\n        support observations and data collection that help\n        distinguish possible explanations from established causes.\n      <\/li>\n\n      <li>\n        <strong>Discuss difficult issues:<\/strong>\n        keep wastewater, development pressure, coastal habitat\n        and environmental compliance in the conversation.\n      <\/li>\n    <\/ul>\n\n    <p>\n      We also recognize that prevention alone cannot repair every\n      damaged reef.
