Gili Trawangan Moves Towards Separate Village Status from Gili Indah

Gili Trawangan Takes a Step Towards Becoming Its Own Village
Gili Trawangan has reached an important stage in its move towards becoming a separate administrative village. However, its current status is Desa Persiapan Gili Trawangan—a preparatory village—rather than a fully established independent village.
What Has Changed?
Reports published on 29 and 30 September 2026 confirm that Gili Trawangan is among 26 preparatory villages in North Lombok that have received registration codes from the provincial government.
The registration is recorded in Governor of West Nusa Tenggara letter 400.10.5/530/GUB.23/2026, dated 25 September 2026. Inside Lombok specifically identifies Gili Trawangan as a preparatory village formed through the subdivision of Desa Gili Indah.
This is a significant step towards a separate village administration, although further stages remain before the process is complete.
What Does This Mean for Gili Air and Gili Meno?
The restructuring has been described as dividing the existing village administration into Desa Gili Indah, the parent village, and Desa Persiapan Gili Trawangan.
This points towards an arrangement in which Gili Trawangan develops its own village administration while Gili Air and Gili Meno remain within Gili Indah. However, the reports reviewed do not provide the official boundary document needed to confirm the precise territorial arrangement and when it takes full effect.
Is Gili Trawangan Now Independent?
The latest reporting does not establish that Gili Trawangan has already become a desa definitif, or fully established village.
According to Atmaja Gumbara, head of North Lombok’s department responsible for community and village empowerment, the next steps include preparing the appointment of acting village heads and evaluating the preparatory villages every six months.
If progress meets the requirements, the process can advance through a draft regional regulation, provincial review, and evaluation by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Registration as a preparatory village therefore does not automatically confer definitive village status.
Why Is the Administration Being Divided?
Local officials describe village subdivision as a way to improve access to government services, population administration, infrastructure, and development.
For Gili Trawangan, a separate village administration could provide a more direct focus on the island’s residents and local priorities. Whether those benefits are achieved will depend on how the new administration develops.
An Important Transition for the Gili Islands
Gili Trawangan’s registration as a preparatory village represents a concrete advance in the separation process.
For now, the most accurate description is that Gili Trawangan is moving towards becoming a separate village from Desa Gili Indah. Confirmation of full separation should follow the official decisions establishing definitive village status and its boundaries.
