Why Oceans 5 Gili Air Invests in the Next Generation of Indonesian Marine Scientists

The Next Generation of Indonesian Marine Scientists
Indonesia is home to the world’s largest archipelago, stretching across more than 17,000 islands. It is a country blessed with extraordinary marine biodiversity, vibrant coral reefs, thousands of fish species, sea turtles, sharks, manta rays, and countless other marine organisms. It is a place where millions of people grow up with the ocean as part of their daily lives.
Yet surprisingly, relatively few Indonesians end up becoming professional Marine Scientists or actively working in marine conservation.
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we believe this needs to change.
Growing Up With the Ocean
Many Indonesian children are born on small islands where the sea is everything.
Some come from fishing families. Others grow up helping in family-owned homestays, transporting people by boat, surfing the waves, or simply spending every day in and around the ocean. They know the tides, the reefs, the weather, and the marine environment better than many visitors who come here to dive.
These young people often have a genuine passion for the sea. Many dream of studying marine biology or marine science and protecting Indonesia’s incredible underwater world.
Unfortunately, for many, that dream remains out of reach.
The Financial Barrier
One of the biggest obstacles is not a lack of passion or talent.
It is the cost of scuba diving.
Marine science is much more than studying in a classroom. To truly understand coral reefs and marine ecosystems, students need practical underwater experience. They need to observe marine life in its natural environment, collect scientific data, conduct surveys, identify species, and assist with conservation projects.
Without scuba diving qualifications, many of these opportunities simply aren’t available.
However, scuba diving is an expensive activity in Indonesia. With average monthly salaries around IDR 3.5 million (approximately €175), recreational diving is simply unaffordable for many students and young professionals. Even those enrolled in marine science programs often struggle to gain the diving experience that would allow them to become effective underwater researchers.
As a result, many talented students never develop into active marine conservationists.
Filling the Gap
Oceans 5 Gili Air decided not to wait for someone else to solve this problem.
Instead, we created opportunities ourselves.
Through our Zero to Hero programs for Indonesian students, participants only pay the mandatory SSI digital learning materials and certification costs. The instruction, mentoring, and practical training are provided by our experienced professional team.
Our goal is not simply to certify divers.
Our goal is to develop future marine professionals who can contribute to Indonesia’s conservation efforts for many years to come.
Supporting Indonesian Universities
Our commitment extends beyond individual students.
Oceans 5 Gili Air regularly works together with Indonesian universities on marine research projects. We support these projects by providing:
- Dive equipment
- Boats
- Experienced dive guides
- Instructors and Divemasters
- Logistical support for underwater fieldwork
- Access to the marine environments around Gili Matra
By removing many of the practical barriers to underwater research, students can spend more time collecting valuable scientific data instead of worrying about equipment or transportation.
These collaborations have supported research on coral reefs, marine ecology, algae, sponges, sea turtles, and many other aspects of Indonesia’s marine ecosystems.
Giving Something Back
Oceans 5 Gili Air has been part of the Gili Islands community for many years.
Indonesia has given us an incredible place to live, work, and dive. The reefs around Gili Matra have allowed us to build our business while sharing the underwater world with thousands of divers from around the globe.
We believe it is our responsibility to give something back.
Supporting Indonesian students and researchers is one way we can invest directly in the future of the country’s marine environment. Every new Marine Scientist represents another person who may contribute to reef conservation, sustainable fisheries, marine park management, environmental education, or scientific research.
These are investments that benefit everyone.
No Grants. No Donations.
Many conservation programs depend on grants or fundraising campaigns.
Ours does not.
Everything we do is funded through our normal business operations.
When guests choose Oceans 5 Gili Air for their diving holiday or stay at our resort, they are helping make these educational opportunities possible. Every dive course, every fun dive, and every room booked helps us continue supporting Indonesian students and university research.
You are not simply booking a dive holiday.
You are helping create opportunities for the next generation of Indonesian Marine Scientists.
Dive With Purpose
Conservation is not only about protecting coral reefs.
It is about investing in the people who will protect those reefs long into the future.
By supporting Indonesian students today, we hope to see more local scientists leading research projects, managing marine protected areas, educating future generations, and becoming ambassadors for one of the richest marine environments on Earth.
If you would like your diving holiday to have a positive impact beyond your own experience, we invite you to join us.
Come diving with Oceans 5 Gili Air.
Stay with us.
Together, we can help Indonesia’s future Marine Scientists turn their dreams into reality.
