It was the brainchild of Sander, a passionate diver with a vision to create something extraordinary – his own dive center. Amidst skepticism from friends who deemed his aspirations audacious, Sander embarked on a journey that would redefine diving experiences in the region.
The Vision Unfolds
Against the tide of doubt, Sander forged ahead. In 2009, he acquired a piece of land in the harbor of Gili Air, an unconventional choice that raised eyebrows. But Sander saw beyond the surface; he envisioned a haven where diving boats could dock safely, and where enthusiasts could embark on underwater adventures with ease. Thus, the foundation of Oceans 5 Gili Air was laid.
Transformation Begins
The transformation began in earnest. A sprawling pool, an emblem of luxury in those times, emerged on the site of a former football field. A Joglo, transported from Yogyakarta, found new life as the dive shop. With meticulous attention to detail, the land metamorphosed into Oceans 5 Gili Air – a boutique dive resort boasting 11 cozy rooms.
Community Hub
Yet, Sander’s vision extended beyond his own enterprise. He sought to create a vibrant community hub, offering amenities ranging from boutique shops to ticket offices, restaurants, a gym, and even an ATM. Oceans 5 became more than a dive center; it became a nucleus of activity, pulsating with the energy of shared experiences and camaraderie.
PADI Recognition
In April 2010, Oceans 5 attained recognition as a PADI Dive Shop, marking a significant milestone in its evolution. Over the years, it ascended to the pinnacle of achievement, earning the distinction of being the sole PADI Career Development Centre on Gili Air. Throughout this journey, Sander remained steadfastly committed, actively participating in the day-to-day operations, whether teaching diving courses or guiding aspiring instructors as a PADI Course Director.

Sander’s ethos of fostering growth within the company has transformed employees into invaluable assets. From the devastating earthquake of August 2018 to the tumultuous period ushered in by the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2023, Oceans 5 weathered numerous storms.
