Why Your First Scuba Diving Experience Should Start in a Training Pool

Why Your First Scuba Diving Experience Should Start in a Training Pool

A Comfortable Beginning for Your Underwater Adventure

Your first breath underwater is a moment to remember. It can also feel unfamiliar: you are wearing new equipment, breathing through a regulator and discovering how to move beneath the surface.

Starting in a training pool gives you space to get familiar with these sensations before exploring the ocean. At Oceans 5 Gili Air, beginners start in one of our two purpose-built training pools, with an instructor guiding them through their first steps.

Why Begin in a Pool?

The ocean brings changing conditions and plenty of distractions. A pool provides a more predictable place to focus on your instructor, your equipment and how you feel underwater.

Get Used to Breathing Underwater

Breathing through a regulator may feel strange at first. With your instructor nearby, you can take time to settle into the experience and ask for help whenever you need it.

Understand Your Equipment

Your mask, fins and buoyancy control device all have a purpose. Trying them in the pool helps turn unfamiliar equipment into something you understand and feel more comfortable using.

Practise Before the Ocean

Your instructor introduces the skills required for your program, demonstrates them and gives you time to practise. This preparation helps make the move to open water more manageable.

Communicate and Build Confidence

You learn how to use underwater hand signals, including how to tell your instructor something feels uncomfortable. Confidence grows through practice and clear communication.

Two Pools Designed for Dive Training

Oceans 5 has two large, purpose-built training pools. Having dedicated space for scuba practice lets our instructors introduce equipment, demonstrate skills and help students become comfortable before their ocean dives.

A pool’s size is only part of the experience. The teaching, supervision and time available to practise matter too. Some beginners relax quickly; others need more time with a particular skill. Both are normal.

Our SSI Open Water Diver Course combines pool practice with theory and ocean training, helping you build your understanding step by step.

What Happens During Your First Pool Session?

Before entering the water, you meet your instructor, complete the required paperwork and receive an introduction to the equipment and program.

  • Get comfortable: begin with the equipment and your first underwater breaths.
  • Learn to communicate: practise the hand signals you will use with your instructor.
  • Develop basic skills: work through the exercises appropriate to your chosen program.
  • Start moving: discover how your equipment and body position affect your movement underwater.
  • Talk about the next step: discuss your comfort and progress with your instructor.

You do not need to pretend to feel confident. Tell your instructor if you are nervous, unsure or need another demonstration.

Good Habits Begin Before You Reach the Reef

Learning to control your position underwater is about more than comfort. It also helps you avoid accidental contact with coral and marine life.

Pool training introduces habits you can develop throughout your diving: moving thoughtfully, keeping equipment close and listening to your instructor. Once in the ocean, observe animals without touching, chasing or feeding them.
