Can You Learn to Dive in Just 3 Days?

Learn to dive
One of the most common questions we receive at Oceans 5 Gili Air is:
“Can I learn to dive in just 3 days?”
The simple answer is yes, you can. The SSI Open Water Diver course is designed so that most people can complete it in 3 days. However, at Oceans 5 Gili Air, we always tell our guests to plan for 3 to 4 days.
Why?
Because our goal is not to hand you a certification card as quickly as possible. Our goal is to teach you how to become a safe, confident, and comfortable diver.
Learning to Dive Is More Than Passing a Course
Unfortunately, in some places around the world, dive courses have become a race against the clock. The focus is on getting students certified as quickly as possible.
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we believe diving is a skill that deserves proper training and attention.
A certification card is nice, but what really matters is what happens after the course. When you join your first fun dive, travel to another destination, or encounter stronger currents, you should feel confident in your abilities.
That confidence doesn’t come from rushing through exercises. It comes from understanding them and practicing them properly.
Why We Recommend 3-4 Days
The SSI Open Water Diver course includes:
- Academic learning
- Pool training sessions
- Four open water dives
- Safety skills
- Buoyancy training
- Equipment familiarization
- Dive planning
Some students complete everything comfortably in 3 days. Others benefit from an extra day to practice and gain confidence.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking a little longer.
In fact, many of the best divers are the ones who take the time to learn properly.
Small Groups, Better Learning
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we limit our courses to a maximum of four students per instructor.
This allows our instructors to focus on each individual student rather than managing large groups.
Everyone learns at a different pace. Some students master buoyancy immediately, while others need a little extra practice. Some are completely comfortable in the water from the first minute, while others need time to build confidence.
Our instructors adjust the course to the student—not the other way around.
We Don’t Cut Standards
The SSI Open Water Diver course has international training standards, and we follow them exactly.
That means:
- All required pool skills are completed properly.
- All open water training dives are conducted.
- Students demonstrate mastery of the required skills.
- Safety always comes first.
If a student needs extra time, we provide extra time.
If a skill needs more practice, we practice it again.
Our instructors are not interested in producing divers who barely pass. We want to produce divers who are prepared for a lifetime of safe diving adventures.
Buoyancy Matters
One area where many rushed courses fall short is buoyancy training.
A diver with good buoyancy:
- Uses less air
- Protects the coral reef
- Feels more relaxed underwater
- Has better control in currents
- Enjoys diving much more
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, buoyancy is a major focus throughout the course.
We want our students to leave the course feeling comfortable underwater, not simply capable of completing the minimum requirements.
