38 kg of Rubbish Collected During Oceans 5 Gili Air Beach Clean-Up

Oceans 5 Gili Air Beach Clean-Up
Every Friday at 17:00, something special happens in front of Oceans 5 Gili Air. Since 2010, our team has been organizing a weekly beach clean-up, bringing together divers, local residents, guests, and volunteers with one common goal: keeping the beautiful beaches of Gili Air clean.
Last Friday was another incredible example of what a motivated group of people can achieve. Our volunteers and SSI Divemaster candidates worked together to collect an impressive 38 kilograms of rubbish from the beach in front of Oceans 5 Gili Air.
A Team Effort for a Cleaner Ocean
During the clean-up, the team collected a wide variety of waste, including:
- Plastic bottles
- Plastic bags
- Drinking straws
- Flip-flops
- Aluminium cans
- Glass bottles
- Food packaging
- Fishing debris
- And many other types of rubbish washed ashore
Every piece of rubbish removed from the beach helps protect the marine life around the Gili Islands. Sea turtles, reef fish, crabs, birds, and countless other species all benefit from cleaner beaches and healthier oceans.
Giving Recyclables a Second Life
Not everything collected ends up as waste.
Our local recycling hero Rama carefully separates all recyclable materials during the clean-up. Plastic bottles, cans, and other recyclable items are transported to Lombok, where they can be sold and recycled.
The remaining non-recyclable waste is also transported to Lombok, where it is processed in an incinerator, ensuring it is disposed of responsibly instead of remaining on the island or ending up back in the ocean.
This partnership helps reduce the environmental impact while supporting local recycling initiatives.
More Than Picking Up Rubbish
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, our weekly beach clean-up is much more than an environmental activity—it is also an important part of our SSI Divemaster Program.
Being a professional divemaster is about much more than leading dives. It is about becoming a leader, an educator, and an ambassador for the ocean.
By organizing the weekly beach clean-up, our Divemaster candidates develop essential professional skills, including:
- Planning and organizing an event
- Speaking confidently in front of a group
- Giving environmental briefings
- Managing volunteers
- Assessing potential safety risks
- Working together as a professional team
- Leading by example
These practical experiences help prepare our candidates for their future careers as dive professionals while making a real difference for the environment.
More Than 15 Years of Conservation
Since starting these weekly clean-ups in 2010, Oceans 5 Gili Air has helped remove many thousands of kilograms of rubbish from the beaches around Gili Air.
Environmental conservation has always been one of the core values of our dive centre. Every Friday, we are reminded that small actions, repeated consistently over many years, can have a significant positive impact.
Whether you are joining us for a fun dive, an SSI Open Water Course, or a Divemaster internship, you are becoming part of a dive centre that believes protecting the ocean is just as important as enjoying it.
