A Divemaster course is your first step into professional diving.
Where you complete it matters.
At Oceans 5, you don’t simply complete the required exercises and receive a certification. You spend 6โ8 weeks immersed in the daily operation of a working dive centre, learning alongside experienced instructors and Divemasters.
Experience is one of the most important parts of becoming a capable Divemaster.
Throughout your 6โ8-week internship, you can join our scheduled fun dives without paying per dive. This gives you extensive time underwater to improve your buoyancy, navigation, awareness, air consumption and confidence.
However, the goal is not simply to collect dives. Your diving is integrated into a structured professional-development program. You will become familiar with different dive sites, currents, conditions and groups while learning how to plan, evaluate and conduct dives responsibly.
Every dive is an opportunity to become a better dive professional.
Oceans 5 is an SSI Instructor Training Center on Gili Air.
During your Divemaster Internship, you’ll see how recreational courses, professional training and daily dive operations are organised.
You’ll work around instructors, Divemasters and instructor candidates, giving you an insight into the professional diving industry beyond the standard Divemaster curriculum.
Every Divemaster candidate at Oceans 5 is assigned a dedicated mentor who oversees their complete training journey.
You will assist and learn from all five of our main instructors, allowing you to experience different teaching styles, approaches and areas of expertise. Each of these instructors has previously trained and certified more than ten Divemaster candidates.
While the entire instructor team contributes to your development, your mentor remains responsible for monitoring your overall progress. They will provide regular feedback, identify areas requiring additional practice and ensure that every part of your Divemaster training is completed to the required professional standard.
This structure gives you the best of both worlds: broad experience working with different instructors and the consistency of one dedicated mentor who follows your development from the beginning of the internship through to certification.
Oceans 5 has two large training pools.
They provide plenty of space for skill development, rescue workshops, buoyancy training and practical Divemaster exercises without depending on public swimming-pool availability.
Complete recreational scuba equipment rental is included throughout your 6โ8-week Divemaster Internship, so you do not need to arrive with a full set of personal equipment.
However, as you progress toward working as a dive professional, we recommend gradually investing in equipment that fits you properly and that you know well. Every Divemaster candidate must have their own dive computer, compass, surface marker buoy and reel before completing the program.
If you are unsure what to bring or purchase, your mentor will help you choose suitable professional diving equipment.
Your training takes place inside the Gili Matra Marine Protected Area, covering Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan.
The variety of dive sites and conditions gives you experience with different environments while learning how to evaluate a site and make appropriate decisions for the divers you supervise.
A Divemaster Internship on Gili Air is about more than professional trainingโit is also a chance to experience tropical island life.
Gili Air is a small, relaxed island with palm trees, sandy beaches and no cars or motorbikes. Your daily transport is a bicycle or a pair of flip-flops, and everything you need is within easy reach.
Your days are spent diving in warm, crystal-clear water and discovering the amazing marine life of the Gili Islands. After training, you can relax on the beach, watch the sunset or enjoy a cocktail with your fellow Divemaster candidates and the Oceans 5 team.
It is a simple rhythm: dive, learn, relax and enjoy island life while taking your first step into a professional diving career.
Being a good recreational diver and being a good Divemaster are two different things.
As a Divemaster, other divers will look to you for leadership.
You’ll need to observe conditions, organise groups, communicate clearly, recognise problems and make decisions before small issues become bigger ones.
During your SSI Divemaster Course on Gili Air, you’ll develop skills in:
The emphasis throughout the internship is on becoming increasingly independent and taking responsibility for the activities you are qualified to supervise.
Your Divemaster training combines knowledge development, water skills, practical workshops and real-world experience.
You’ll learn how to organise and supervise diving activities, evaluate the experience and ability of divers and plan dives appropriate for the group and conditions.
A good briefing is much more than describing a dive site.
You’ll learn how to communicate the dive plan clearly, explain environmental conditions, discuss marine life, establish procedures and make sure your divers understand what is expected before entering the water.
Guiding is one of the most important practical skills for a working Divemaster.
You’ll develop your ability to navigate, control the pace of a dive, monitor your group, manage different experience levels and respond when something doesn’t go according to plan.
Conditions around the Gili Islands can change.
You’ll learn to observe currents, visibility, entry and exit points, boat traffic and other environmental factors before deciding how a dive should be conducted.
You’ll gain experience assisting instructors during diver training.
This teaches you positioning, student observation, communication and how an instructor organises a group during confined and open-water training.
Professional divers need to be able to respond when something goes wrong.
Your training develops your rescue skills and your ability to manage incidents, searches and emergency situations in an organised way.
Excellent buoyancy should be expected from a Divemaster.
During your internship, we’ll work on your buoyancy, trim, propulsion, positioning and awareness until you can demonstrate the level of control expected from a dive professional.
This isn’t only about looking good underwater.
Better control helps you:
As a Divemaster, you are a role model underwater.
Your diving should reflect that.
The Oceans 5 Divemaster Internship goes beyond the minimum course requirements.
Throughout your training, additional workshops help connect your SSI education with situations you’ll encounter while working in a dive centre.
Depending on the program and training schedule, workshops can include:
These workshops are designed to help turn theory into practical professional skills.
A dive professional has a responsibility to the environment in which they work.
Oceans 5 operates inside the Gili Matra Marine Protected Area, and conservation is integrated into our daily operations and professional training.
During your Divemaster Internship, you’ll learn about responsible diving, marine-life identification and environmental awareness.
You’ll also have opportunities to participate in conservation activities such as our regular beach clean-ups and other marine-conservation projects.
The objective isn’t simply to tell customers not to touch coral.
A professional Divemaster should understand why protecting the marine environment matters and be able to communicate that to other divers.
Want to make conservation a bigger part of your professional career?
Active-status SSI Divemasters may qualify to teach selected SSI Ecology Specialty programs, allowing you to combine professional diving with marine education.
Depending on your pathway, opportunities can include:
This can add another dimension to your professional profile and help you become more than a dive guide.
You can become an environmental educator as well as a dive professional.
