Return to Diving with Confidence

A diving certification does not expire, but skills, routines and confidence can fade when you have not been underwater for a while.

Forgetting how to clear a mask or recover a regulator is not something you want to discover after entering the ocean. A refresher gives you time to review your equipment, practise the essential procedures and ask questions in a controlled environment.

At Oceans 5, the aim is not to test or embarrass you. The session is designed to identify what you remember, rebuild what feels uncertain and help you return to diving safely.

There is no benefit in pretending to feel comfortable. Tell your SSI professional which skills concern you so the session can focus on what you actually need.

What Will You Review?

The Scuba Skills Update has three parts.

1. Knowledge and Equipment Review

Before entering the water, your SSI professional reviews important diving principles and helps you become familiar with the equipment again.

Topics may include:

  • Assembling and checking your scuba equipment
  • The pre-dive safety check
  • Equalisation and controlled descents
  • Breathing continuously and never holding your breath
  • Buoyancy, weighting and body position
  • Depth, time, gas and no-decompression limits
  • Safe ascent rates and safety stops
  • Air-sharing procedures
  • Hand signals and buddy communication
  • Local currents, boat procedures and surface-marker buoys
  • Responsible behaviour around coral and marine life

The review is adapted to your certification, experience and the length of time since your last dive.

2. Personalised Pool Skills Session

You will practise the core skills in one of our two purpose-built training pools before returning to open water.

The session normally includes:

  • Mask removal, replacement and clearing
  • Regulator clearing and recovery
  • Alternate-air-source use as donor and receiver
  • Controlled air-sharing ascent procedures
  • Neutral buoyancy and hovering
  • Controlled descents and ascents
  • Recovering a comfortable horizontal diving position
  • BCD use at the surface and underwater
  • Emergency procedures appropriate to your certification

You can also request any other skill that you want to practise. The session continues until the required skills are completed comfortably and your SSI professional considers you ready for the ocean dive.

3. One Ocean Dive

After the pool session, you will join one of our boats for an ocean dive at a site selected for the conditions and your comfort.

The purpose is to return to normal divingโ€”not to repeat a long exercise circuit underwater. You will complete a proper buddy check, enter the water, descend under control, maintain your buoyancy, monitor your gas and finish with a safe ascent and safety stop.

Your SSI professional remains close and can provide assistance or additional coaching when required.

During the dive, you may encounter turtles, clownfish, moray eels, pufferfish, blue sea stars and many other reef species. Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.

Your One-Day Scuba Refresher

The exact schedule depends on group planning, student progress, boat departures and ocean conditions.

Step 1: Certification and Experience Check

Show your certification and discuss your diving history, last dive, previous training and any skills that make you feel uncertain.

Step 2: Knowledge and Equipment Review

Revisit essential theory, assemble the equipment and complete a thorough pre-dive safety check.

Step 3: Pool Skills

Practise the core skills in controlled conditions. Your SSI professional will give feedback on buoyancy, trim, breathing and technique.

Step 4: Ocean Dive

Apply the refreshed skills during a supervised boat dive around the Gili Islands.

Step 5: Debrief and Recognition

Discuss the dive, log it and receive recommendations for suitable future dives or further training. After successful completion, the program can be processed for an SSI Scuba Skills Update recognition card.

Why Refresh Your Skills at Oceans 5?

Pool Practice Before the Ocean

You can rebuild confidence without current, waves, boat traffic or pressure from other divers. Problems are easier to solve in a controlled pool than during the first minutes of an ocean dive.

Two Purpose-Built Training Pools

Our two large pools provide shallow and deeper areas for progressive practice. You can begin where you feel comfortable and move deeper as your control returns.

Maximum Four Participants per SSI Professional

Small groups allow personal observation and feedback. The session can focus on the skills that each diver actually needs instead of rushing everyone through the same checklist.

Neutral Buoyancy, Not Kneeling

We want you to return to genuine diving. Buoyancy, trim and control are practised in a realistic position whenever appropriate instead of relying on the bottom for support.

One Real Ocean Dive Included

Pool confidence is important, but the final step is using those skills in open water. The included ocean dive helps bridge the gap between practice and joining regular fun dives.

Local Preparation for Gili Island Diving

Drift diving is common around the Gili Islands. Your review can include local boat procedures, current awareness, safe ascents and the importance of staying close to your buddy and group.

An SSI Instructor Training Center

Oceans 5 has trained divers on Gili Air since 2010. As an SSI Instructor Training Center, we focus on realistic skills, clear feedback and developing comfortable, responsible divers.

Conservation Starts with Control

Divers who are anxious or poorly buoyant are more likely to contact the reef. Refreshing your control helps you enjoy the dive while reducing your impact on coral and marine life.

Who Should Take a Scuba Refresher?

At Oceans 5, a Scuba Skills Update is required when your last dive was six months or more ago.

It is also strongly recommended when:

  • You feel nervous about returning to the water
  • You cannot remember how to assemble or check the equipment
  • Mask or regulator skills make you uncomfortable
  • Your buoyancy was difficult on your previous dives
  • You have very few logged dives
  • Your last dives were in conditions very different from the Gili Islands
  • You are continuing an unfinished entry-level course after a long break
  • A dive professional observes that your present skills need review

You can also choose a refresher even if you have dived more recently. Confidence and ability matter more than pride or the date written in a logbook.

Who Can Join?

To join as a certified diver, you must:

  • Be at least 10 years old
  • Hold an SSI Open Water Diver, Junior Open Water Diver or equivalent certification from another recognised training organisation
  • Complete the required medical questionnaire
  • Be medically fit to dive

The SSI program may also be used for an Open Water Diver student who has completed all pool/confined-water training but needs an additional practice session before the open-water training dives.

If the medical questionnaire identifies a condition that may affect diving, physician approval may be required before participating.

What Should You Bring?

Bring your certification details, logbook or digital dive log, swimwear, towel, reusable water bottle and reef-safe sun protection.

We provide standard scuba equipment. If you have your own mask, dive computer or other personal equipment, you are welcome to use it after your SSI professional checks its suitability.

After Your Scuba Skills Update

Successful completion means you have demonstrated the required refresher knowledge and skills under professional supervision. It does not replace your existing certification or upgrade your certified depth or training limits.

After the pool review and ocean dive, your SSI professional will advise whether you are ready to join normal fun dives or would benefit from additional practice.

Once comfortable, you can continue exploring the Gili Islands in a group of no more than four certified divers with one of our experienced local SSI Divemasters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an SSI Scuba Skills Update?

It is a refresher program for certified divers who want to review their diving knowledge and practise essential skills under professional supervision.

When does Oceans 5 require a refresher?

Oceans 5 requires a Scuba Skills Update when your last dive was six months or more ago. We may also recommend one when your recent experience, confidence or demonstrated skills indicate that a review would make your diving safer and more enjoyable.

Does my diving certification expire?

Recreational scuba certifications generally do not expire, but your ability and confidence can decline during periods without diving. Dive centres may require a refresher based on inactivity, experience, local conditions or observed skills.

How long does the refresher take?

The complete Oceans 5 program takes one day and includes a knowledge review, pool session and one ocean dive. Exact timing depends on student progress and the boat schedule.

Is an ocean dive included?

Yes. After successfully completing the pool review, you will join one supervised ocean boat dive.

Which skills will I practise?

Core skills include mask clearing, regulator clearing and recovery, alternate-air-source use, air-sharing procedures, neutral buoyancy, hovering and controlled descents and ascents. The session can include additional skills based on your needs.

Will I have to remove my mask?

Mask removal, replacement and clearing are core diving skills and are normally part of the update. Tell your SSI professional if this skill makes you anxious so it can be rebuilt progressively and without rushing.

What if I cannot complete a skill comfortably?

You will receive time and coaching in the pool. You will only continue to the ocean when the required skills are completed comfortably and the SSI professional considers you ready. Additional training may be recommended if necessary.

Can I join with a PADI or another agencyโ€™s certification?

Yes. Equivalent Open Water or Junior Open Water certifications from recognised training organisations are accepted.

Is equipment included?

Yes. Standard scuba equipment is included. Nitrox and 15-litre tanks are available for an additional charge when appropriate.

Is the Marine Park fee included?

No. The Gili Matra Marine Park fee of IDR 100,000 is charged separately.

Will I receive a new certification?

You do not receive a new diver-level certification. After successful completion, SSI can issue a Scuba Skills Update digital recognition card documenting the refresher.

Can I go fun diving afterwards?

Usually, yes. Your SSI professional will evaluate your comfort during the pool session and ocean dive and advise whether you are ready for regular fun dives or need more practice.

Can I request practice with a particular skill?

Yes. Tell us before the session which skills concern you. The review can be adapted to your experience and needs while still covering the required program content.

Is a refresher useful for experienced divers?

Yes. Logged dives do not prevent skills from becoming rusty. An experienced diver returning after a long break can benefit from reviewing equipment, emergency procedures, buoyancy and local diving practices.
