Oceans 5 has been training divers on Gili Air since 2010, from complete beginners through to dive professionals. Professional education is an important part of our dive centre, supported by dedicated training facilities and small candidate groups.
Our location on Gili Air means your SSI Instructor Training Course takes place in the Gili Islands, one of Indonesia’s best-known scuba-diving destinations.
Our SSI ITCs are deliberately small.
A maximum of six candidates allows more individual attention, more opportunity for feedback and more time to work on your personal teaching development.
Oceans 5 has two large training pools, providing plenty of space for confined-water workshops, skill demonstrations and teaching scenarios.
Your open-water teaching takes place inside the Gili Matra Marine Protected Area, with access to dive sites around Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan.
Different dive sites and changing conditions provide opportunities to develop your organisation and learn how to adapt to a real diving environment.
The SSI Instructor Evaluation following our scheduled ITCs also takes place on Gili Air.
You complete your SSI ITC and Instructor Evaluation in the Gili Islands, without having to relocate immediately after your Instructor Training Course.
Your SSI ITC at Oceans 5 is led by Warren โWazโ Beyers, SSI Instructor Trainer on Gili Air.
Waz works closely with candidates throughout their academic, confined-water and open-water training, with a strong focus on student control, organisation, positioning, communication and problem solving.
With a maximum of six candidates per ITC, there is plenty of opportunity for individual coaching and feedback throughout the course.
His goal is simple: prepare you not only to pass the Instructor Evaluation, but to confidently teach real students afterwards.
Being able to demonstrate a scuba skill doesn’t automatically make someone a good instructor.
A dive instructor must be able to manage people, maintain control and recognise when something isn’t going according to plan.
During your SSI ITC, we focus strongly on:

Where should you position yourself? Can you see every student? Where should your assistant be? What happens if one student has a problem? Can you intervene immediately?
Sometimes an organisation that looked perfect during the briefing doesn’t work as expected underwater.
Recognising that and adapting while maintaining control is an important part of becoming a professional SSI Instructor.
Neutral buoyancy is an important part of the Oceans 5 teaching philosophy.
Whenever appropriate, skills are taught and practised while neutrally buoyant and in a realistic diving position, rather than routinely kneeling on the bottom.
During your SSI Instructor Training Course, you learn how to organise and control students while maintaining good buoyancy, trim, positioning and awareness.
This approach doesn’t only help create better divers. It also supports our no-touching philosophy and our responsibility as a dive centre operating inside the Gili Matra Marine Protected Area.

The SSI Instructor Training Course develops the knowledge, teaching ability and professional judgement required to work as an SSI Open Water Instructor.
You will learn how to structure and deliver effective academic presentations, explain diving concepts clearly, use SSI educational materials and evaluate student understanding.
The goal is not simply to know the information yourself, but to communicate it in a way your students understand.

To join the SSI Instructor Training Course, candidates must meet the current SSI professional training requirements.
You must be at least 18 years old.
You must be a certified Divemaster or equivalent from a recognised training organisation.
You don’t need to be an SSI Divemaster. Divemasters from other recognised training agencies may enter the SSI Instructor pathway when they meet the applicable requirements.
To start the ITC, you need at least:
60 logged dives and 40 hours underwater.
Before attending the Instructor Evaluation:
100 logged dives and at least 65 hours underwater.

After registering for your ITC, you receive access to the required SSI Digital Learning.
We recommend completing the digital learning before arriving on Gili Air. This allows the 16 training days to focus much more heavily on practical instructor development, workshops, teaching and feedback.
Use the SSI pre-test materials before the course to identify any areas of dive theory that need refreshing.

Anyone who meets the SSI prerequisites can join the Instructor Training Course (ITC). This includes certified SSI Divemasters and Divemasters from other recognised training agencies who wish to become SSI Open Water Instructors. If you’re already an instructor with another organisation, you may also be eligible for our 10-day Instructor Crossover programme.
The standard SSI Instructor Training Course at Oceans 5 Gili Air takes 16 days, followed by the 2-day Instructor Evaluation (IE). For instructors crossing over from another agency, we also offer a 10-day Instructor Crossover Course, allowing experienced professionals to transition to SSI more quickly.

During the course you’ll develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to teach scuba diving safely and professionally. Before starting the course, you’ll need to meet the current SSI professional prerequisites, including the required number of logged dives, an up-to-date dive medical, current First Aid, CPR and Oxygen Provider certification, and Enriched Air Nitrox certification. After successfully passing the SSI Instructor Evaluation and completing your professional registration, you’ll become an SSI Open Water Instructor, qualified to teach entry-level scuba courses around the world.
