Gili Air: Open for Business FAQ
Not sure about the conditions on Gili Air since the Lombok Quake? We are here to an- swer all your questions so you can once again enjoy this island paradise and the local hospitality it’s so famous for.
How are things on Gili Air since the August Earthquakes?
The damage on Gili Air wasn’t as bad as some other islands and surrounding Lombok regions. Whilst many businesses are already back up and running, a few have had to close temporarily but will be re-opening soon. There are also many restaurants and bars already back in business with more opening every day.
Oceans 5 Gili Air is fully operational; we have been busy fixing up the resort, giving it a new lick of paint and some tender loving care. We currently only have one bungalow left to repair before we are completely rebuilt.
Overall the island is recovering well and the community is even more united. Like all the courageous, hardy stock of this island nation, they’re true survivors and have come back stronger than ever before.
How do we get to Gili Air from Bali?
Getting to The Gili Islands from Bali is super straightforward. All you need to do is book through your hotel or Bali agent upon arrival. Most hotels in Bali offer transport to The Gili Islands with front door pickups and delivery to either Serangan (near Sanur) approx- imately 30 minutes from Denpasar, or Padang Bai harbor, approximately 90 minutes from Denpasar. The boat companies we recommend are Wahana, Bluewater Express or Eka Jaya.
You can also pre-book online through www.ekajayafastboat.com They have a big, comfortable boat and will pick you up from your hotel (pick-up included in the ticket price).
Do you arrange transport from Lombok to Gili Air?
We sure do. Transport includes the car ride from the airport to Bangsal harbor which takes approximately 90 minutes and the boat ride from Bangsal to Gili Air which takes approximately 20 minutes.
For flights arriving before 3 pm, the cost of transport is 1.000.000 IDR (for a maximum of 4 people).
For flights arriving after 3 pm the cost of transport would then be 1.200.000 IDR, as we’d need to charter a private boat.
Please send your flight details to email@example.com if you would like us to arrange transport for you.
What type of accommodation is available?
There is still a huge variety of accommodation options on the island. From backpacker hostels to luxury villas, homestays to boutique, architecturally-designed hotels. There are 277 hotels and over 80-holiday rentals up for grabs with something for every kind of traveler.
Or come stay with us! At Oceans 5 we have Pool Bungalows which feature a queen-size bed, AC, hot water, TV, fridge and safe with an a la carte breakfast included. What dining options are available?
There’s so much variety here on Gili Air that you could eat each of your meals from a dif- ferent country! We have:
Traditional Italian pizzas and pasta, the best comfort food after a big night or a great feed to share with the whole family.
American-style breakfast, eggs Benedict that we think has the best hollandaise on all three islands.
Warung – inexpensive Indo food, like Nasi Campur that’s great as a snack while you walk along the beach or explore inland vintage shops.
Gluten-free and vegan brekky joints with different-colored smoothies, fruits, grains, and yoghurts.
Burger joints for when you just need a solid western feed.
Kebab joints that are great for a late night treat or to soak up all the post-party vodka joss.
Mexican food that will add some serious flavor to your trip.
Beyond the food hot spots there are also great cocktail joints with sunset views to die for, and beer bars with both bintangs and imported beer. Pop down for a drink or two and let the locals show you how to party – Gili Air style!
What is the diving like?
Diving around the Gili Islands is truly amazing! The islands offer a stunning diversity of
flora and fauna. The larger species such as reef sharks, turtles, bumphead parrot fish, big schools of trevallies, and snappers can be spotted year-round, as can the micro life like nudibranchs, seahorses, pygmy seahorses, pipefishes and mandarin fish.
The furthest dive sites are only 25 minutes away from Oceans5, and the boat returns to the dive shop after each dive, which makes it easy to choose a dive schedule. We cater for three dives a day, and night-dives upon request.
Is there much damage to the reef?
The earthquake was definitely felt both above and below the water, but all the turtles remain and, while some sites have changed with new walls appearing and new ocean floors being revealed, many remain untouched.
In some places, it will seem like a completely new dive, as fresh and exciting as the first time you came here. Sunset reef now even has thermal holes that have appeared since the quake, which are pretty exciting.
What other activities are available on the island?
Diving isn’t the only water activity available on The Gilis, there is also Snorkeling, Pad- dle-boarding, even Scubawing – A new and exciting way to explore the underwater world around Gili Air. Have a go and pretty soon you’ll be performing impressive under- water acrobatic maneuvers. The board is easy to control and most people are able to dive and spin after just 5 to10 minutes.
Or perhaps stay on land and go horse-riding on a deserted beach. Take your partner on that perfect sunset ride, straight out of your favorite romcom or romance novel.
And for the perfect ending to your rediscovery of Gili Air, find yourself in one of the many beautiful yoga retreats on the island and zen your way back to civilization.
Gili Air is open for business and very much alive and waiting for you to find your own paradise here, with us.
Come and visit again soon – you’ll be glad you did.
