How are things on Gili Air since the August Earthquakes?

The damage on Gili Air wasn’t as bad as some other islands and surrounding Lombok regions. Whilst many businesses are already back up and running, a few have had to close temporarily but will be re-opening soon. There are also many restaurants and bars already back in business with more opening every day.

Oceans 5 Gili Air is fully operational; we have been busy fixing up the resort, giving it a new lick of paint and some tender loving care. We currently only have one bungalow left to repair before we are completely rebuilt.
Overall the island is recovering well and the community is even more united. Like all the courageous, hardy stock of this island nation, they’re true survivors and have come back stronger than ever before.

What is the diving like?

Diving around Gili Air
Diving around Gili Air

Diving around the Gili Islands is truly amazing! The islands offer a stunning diversity of
flora and fauna. The larger species such as reef sharks, turtles, bumphead parrot fish, big schools of trevallies, and snappers can be spotted year-round, as can the micro life like nudibranchs, seahorses, pygmy seahorses, pipefishes and mandarin fish.
The furthest dive sites are only 25 minutes away from Oceans5, and the boat returns to the dive shop after each dive, which makes it easy to choose a dive schedule. We cater for three dives a day, and night-dives upon request.
Is there much damage to the reef?
The earthquake was definitely felt both above and below the water, but all the turtles remain and, while some sites have changed with new walls appearing and new ocean floors being revealed, many remain untouched.
In some places, it will seem like a completely new dive, as fresh and exciting as the first time you came here. Sunset reef now even has thermal holes that have appeared since the quake, which are pretty exciting.

What other activities are available on the island?

Diving isn’t the only water activity available on The Gilis, there is also Snorkeling, Pad- dle-boarding, even Scubawing – A new and exciting way to explore the underwater world around Gili Air. Have a go and pretty soon you’ll be performing impressive under- water acrobatic maneuvers. The board is easy to control and most people are able to dive and spin after just 5 to10 minutes.
Or perhaps stay on land and go horse-riding on a deserted beach. Take your partner on that perfect sunset ride, straight out of your favorite romcom or romance novel.
And for the perfect ending to your rediscovery of Gili Air, find yourself in one of the many beautiful yoga retreats on the island and zen your way back to civilization.
Gili Air is open for business and very much alive and waiting for you to find your own paradise here, with us.
Come and visit again soon – you’ll be glad you did.
