The Advanced Open Water course is not simply about going deeper or collecting another certification card. It is an opportunity to gain experience, improve your awareness and discover which types of diving interest you most.
At Oceans 5, every dive has a purpose. Your instructor will help you improve your buoyancy, trim, positioning, communication and decision-making while introducing you to different diving environments and techniques.
We do not want you to finish the course as the same diver with a deeper depth limit. We want you to become more confident, controlled and independent underwater.
The SSI Advanced Open Water Diver course consists of five open-water training dives. Deep Diving and Navigation form the foundation of the program. You then select three additional specialty dives.
Each training dive introduces you to one area of advanced diving. After the course, the dive may be credited toward the corresponding full SSI Specialty program if you decide to continue your training.
Experience how increased depth affects light, colour, buoyancy, gas consumption and your awareness. Under your instructorโs supervision, you will learn to plan and conduct a deeper dive while monitoring depth, time and breathing gas.
The maximum training depth is 30 metres for divers aged 15 and older. Divers aged 12โ14 are limited to a maximum depth of 21 metres.
Completing this training dive does not by itself certify you as an SSI Deep Diver. The full Deep Diving Specialty includes additional training and dives.
Develop your ability to know where you are underwater instead of simply following a guide. You will practise using a compass, estimating distance and recognising natural navigation features.
Navigation builds confidence and makes you a more aware and capable buddy.
Your three elective dives can be selected from available SSI specialty areas. Options may include:
The final selection depends on your age, certification, interests, dive schedule, instructor availability and ocean conditions. Some dives, including Night Diving, may affect the course schedule.
The exact order of the dives depends on your elective choices, local conditions and the dive schedule.
After booking, you receive access to your SSI digital learning. Complete the relevant theory before arriving so that you can spend more of your time on Gili Air diving.
Your instructor will give you a comprehensive briefing before each specialty dive and discuss the objectives, procedures, equipment and safety considerations.
Meet your instructor, review the course plan and complete your first specialty training dives. The schedule will normally include either Navigation or one of your selected elective dives.
Complete the remaining dives, including Deep Diving when conditions and scheduling are suitable. Your instructor will help you connect what you learned across all five dives and identify useful next steps in your training.
The course normally takes two days. It may take longer when a Night Dive is selected, when the course includes a Friday, or when conditions require the schedule to be adjusted.
We teach a maximum of four students per instructor. Small groups make it easier for your instructor to observe your diving, give useful feedback and adapt the training to your experience and goals.
Every specialty dive should make you a better diver. We focus on buoyancy, trim, awareness, communication and control throughout the courseโnot only on completing the minimum exercises.
Advanced training should demonstrate responsible diving. Skills are performed neutrally buoyant whenever appropriate, without using the reef or seabed for support. Better control protects the underwater environment and prepares you for more demanding dive sites.
Oceans 5 has been teaching scuba diving on Gili Air since 2010. As an SSI Instructor Training Center, we train divers from entry level through to Divemaster and instructor level. The same emphasis on realistic, high-quality training is part of our recreational courses.
The waters around Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan offer reefs, slopes, walls, drift dives and wreck sites. This variety allows your instructor to select appropriate locations for the objectives of each dive and the conditions on the day.
Oceans 5 operates inside the Gili Matra marine conservation area. We follow a no-touch philosophy and encourage every diver to act as an ocean ambassador. Good buoyancy, situational awareness and respectful wildlife encounters are integral parts of advanced diving.
Oceans 5 is not a diving factory. We want to understand what you hope to improve and which types of diving you want to experience. Your course should feel personal, challenging and enjoyable.
To join the SSI Advanced Open Water Diver course, you must:
You do not need a minimum number of logged dives beyond the course prerequisite. However, your instructor may recommend a refresher before the course if you have not dived for six months or longer or if your basic skills need attention.
Divers aged 12โ14 have a maximum depth of 21 metres during the Deep Diving training dive. Age, depth and supervision restrictions apply according to current SSI Training Standards.
Bring your certification details, logbook or digital dive log, swimwear, towel, reusable water bottle and reef-safe sun protection.
We provide the standard scuba equipment required for the course. If you have your own mask, dive computer or other personal equipment, you are welcome to use it after your instructor checks that it is suitable.
The Gili Islands are well suited to continued diver training. Warm tropical water, short boat journeys and varied dive sites let you concentrate on developing skills while enjoying genuine reef dives.
Conditions and currents vary between sites and throughout the day. Your instructor selects each training location according to the course objective, your experience and the conditions.
During the five dives, you may encounter green and hawksbill turtles, moray eels, octopus, nudibranchs, schools of reef fish, trevallies and juvenile whitetip or blacktip reef sharks. Wildlife encounters can never be guaranteed.
After successful completion, you will receive the internationally recognised SSI Advanced Open Water Diver certification. You can then continue completing full SSI Specialty programs, with eligible Advanced Open Water training dives credited toward the corresponding programs.
Anyone who has completed an SSI Open Water Diver certification or an equivalent certification from another recognised training agency can join the SSI Advanced Course. It’s the perfect next step to improve your diving skills, gain confidence, and experience different types of diving.

During your adventure dives, you’ll explore some of the best dive sites around the Gili Islands. There’s an excellent chance of seeing Green and Hawksbill turtles, colourful reef fish, moray eels, octopus, nudibranchs, and juvenile white-tip reef sharks. Depending on the season and dive site, you may also encounter eagle rays, schools of barracuda, and many other fascinating marine species.
