One Dive at a Time

Many dive centres organise two-tank or full-day trips. Oceans 5 uses a different system.

Each departure is a separate dive. After the dive, the boat returns to Oceans 5, where you can relax, eat, spend time with your family or prepare for the next departure.

You decide how much diving fits your day:

  • Join one dive and keep the rest of the day free
  • Complete two dives with a break on Gili Air between them
  • Join all three daytime departures when you want a full diving day
  • Add a night dive on request when scheduling and conditions allow

This flexible system is ideal for solo travellers, couples with different interests, families and divers who prefer not to spend an entire day on a boat.

What to Expect

1. Check-In and Certification Review

Show your certification, complete the required paperwork and tell us about your experience, recent dives, equipment needs and any concerns.

If your last dive was six months or more ago, Oceans 5 requires an SSI Scuba Skills Update before regular fun diving. We may also recommend a refresher when your experience or present comfort indicates that a skills review would be safer.

2. Small and Compatible Groups

We limit groups to a maximum of four certified divers per guide. Whenever possible, groups are organised according to certification, experience, gas choice, air consumption, photography interests and the type of diving requested.

A small group does not automatically mean that every diver has the same ability. Honest information about your experience helps us create the most suitable group and dive plan.

3. Briefing Before Boarding

Your guide gives the dive briefing before the group boards the boat. The briefing covers the site, conditions, expected route, maximum depth, dive time, entry and exit, communication, separation procedures and responsible interaction with marine life.

4. Short Boat Journey

Most commonly used dive sites are reached within approximately 15โ€“30 minutes. Our boats depart directly from Oceans 5 at the harbour of Gili Air.

5. The Dive

Before entering the water, every diver completes a proper pre-dive safety check. The guide assesses the current and confirms the entry location.

The planned dive lasts up to 60 minutes or until the first diver reaches 50 bar, whichever comes first. Depth and route depend on the certification and experience of the group, gas, conditions and site.

Many dives around the Gili Islands involve current. The boat follows the group and collects the divers near their ascent point, avoiding the need to swim back against the current.

6. Safe Ascent and Return

The group completes a controlled ascent and safety stop. Your local SSI Divemaster uses appropriate surface-signalling equipment and coordinates the pickup with the boat crew.

After the dive, return to Oceans 5, log your marine-life sightings and prepare for the next departure if you are diving again.

Choosing the Dive Site

Oceans 5 has access to dive sites around Gili Air, Gili Meno, Gili Trawangan and selected locations closer to Lombok.

Possible sites include:

  • Turtle Heaven
  • Hans Reef
  • Halik and Deep Halik
  • Shark Point
  • Bounty Wreck
  • Meno Slope
  • Deep Turbo
  • Simonโ€™s Reef
  • Sunset Reef

The final site is selected according to:

  • Current, tide, waves and visibility
  • Certification and experience of the divers
  • Maximum planned depth
  • Recent site conditions and marine-life activity
  • Boat and group logistics
  • Sites visited on previous dives
  • Requests from the divers

We welcome site requests, but no particular site or animal encounter can be guaranteed. Safe and suitable conditions always take priority.

Diving Conditions and Marine Life

Water temperatures around the Gili Islands are normally tropical, often around 28โ€“30ยฐC, although cooler water can occur. Visibility and current vary with season, tide, weather and location.

During your dives, you may encounter:

  • Green and hawksbill turtles
  • Juvenile whitetip and blacktip reef sharks
  • Trevallies and schools of reef fish
  • Moray eels and octopus
  • Stingrays and eagle rays
  • Pufferfish, angelfish and butterflyfish
  • Nudibranchs, frogfish and other macro life
  • Seasonal manta rays and other passing pelagic species

Wild animals choose where they go. Oceans 5 never guarantees a particular sighting, and our guides do not chase, touch or feed marine life.

Why Fun Dive with Oceans 5?

Maximum Four Divers per Guide

Small groups make communication easier and allow the guide to pay attention to individual experience, gas consumption and comfort.

Experienced Local SSI Divemasters

Our fun dives are guided by certified local SSI Divemasters who know the reefs, currents and marine life around the Gili Islands. Local knowledge matters when conditions change from one tide to the next.

Flexible Separate Departures

You are not required to book a fixed two-tank package. Choose one, two or three dives and return to Gili Air between departures.

Three Dive Boats

Oceans 5 operates three traditional wooden dive boats. Our boats leave directly from the dive centre, a short walk from the equipment area.

Safety Equipment on Every Boat

Our boats carry emergency oxygen, first-aid supplies, life jackets, communication equipment and flares. Spare equipment is available for common equipment problems.

Responsible Grouping

Whenever possible, we group divers by certification, experience and interests rather than simply filling the next available boat.

Nitrox and Larger Tanks Available

Certified Nitrox divers can request 32% Nitrox for IDR 50,000 per tank. A 15-litre tank is available for IDR 50,000 per dive when reserved in advance.

No-Touch Diving

Oceans 5 operates inside the Gili Matra marine conservation area. We expect our divers and guides to maintain buoyancy, avoid touching coral and give animals space.

More Than a Marketing Label

Oceans 5 has supported conservation and the Gili Air community since opening in 2010. Our work includes weekly beach clean-ups, marine-science support, ecology education and training divers to reduce their impact underwater.
