Learn to Diveโ€”Not to Kneel

An Open Water course should do more than teach you how to complete a list of exercises. It should help you become a comfortable, controlled and responsible diver.

At Oceans 5, buoyancy is part of your training from the beginning. Whenever appropriate, skills are practised while neutrally buoyant and in a realistic diving positionโ€”not routinely while kneeling on the seabed.

You will learn how your breathing, weighting, body position and BCD work together. This helps you move more comfortably underwater, use less energy and avoid unnecessary contact with the reef.

Our goal is not simply to help you pass the course. We want you to finish as a confident diver who is ready to continue diving anywhere in the world.

What Will You Learn?

The SSI Open Water Diver course has three main parts.

1. Digital Learning and Instructor Sessions

After booking, you receive access to the SSI digital learning materials. You can study the theory at your own pace before arriving on Gili Air.

Your instructor will review the most important subjects with you, including dive equipment, pressure, equalisation, buoyancy, breathing gas, dive planning and safe diving procedures.

2. Training in Our Swimming Pools

Your first underwater sessions take place in one of our two large training pools. You begin in controlled conditions and progress at a pace that allows you to become genuinely comfortable.

You will learn essential skills such as:

  • Assembling and checking your equipment
  • Breathing comfortably underwater
  • Clearing and removing your mask
  • Recovering and clearing your regulator
  • Controlling your buoyancy and body position
  • Sharing air with another diver
  • Safe entries, exits, ascents and descents
  • Responding calmly to common diving situations

There is no need to rush. If you need more time to practise a skill, your instructor will help you work through it.

3. Four Ocean Training Dives

Once you are comfortable in the pool, you will complete four open-water training dives around the Gili Islands.

During these dives, you apply the skills you learned in the pool while gaining real diving experience. Between the training exercises, you can explore the reef and may encounter green or hawksbill turtles, clownfish, moray eels, pufferfish, octopus, colourful reef fish and sometimes juvenile reef sharks.

Wildlife encounters are never guaranteed, but every training dive offers an opportunity to discover the underwater world.
